Energy – It’s all around us: I don’t wanna pay!

My wallet has no money in it. It’s not because I lost all of my money in the failing/ailing stock market, it’s because I spent all my money on college tuition.

Now, college tuition isn’t my only concern as a college student. I’m looking into the future, rubbing my crystal ball (don’t get any ideas you sickos) and what do I see?

 FREE ENERGY!

Now you may ask: Crazy man where do you get this free energy, obviously it’s not from fossil fuels.

My answer: the sun, obviously.

I envision a future where the entire southwest area of the united states is dotted with solar panels, enough to fuel a nation and free it (partially) from the greedy grip of OPEC and the oil kingpins.

People will have their own personal solar panels which are directly integrated into their houses, as well as their cars. Residences will use both plant-produced electricity as well as solar power, combining to lower energy costs significantly.

Cars will have solar panels integrated into their new-sleek skin, and these panels will provide direct photo-voltaic energy to the engine, car systems, and the battery, storing it for later. Cars probably, and hopefully, won’t be running on gas in the near future so the solar power will combine with the other power source to power the car. Even if the car isn’t fully reliant on solar power, its use will certainly help improve its fuel effiency.

Think about it… the sun… FREEBIE!

  1. How would you encourage residents of the Southwest to go solar? Tax credits?

Give your opinion, but back it up with research. Be sure to include at least one link (to an editorial, op-ed, story, blog posting, whatever) in each post. Can you link us to a site that shows cars with sleek, solar-powered skin? Is anyone working on this technology?

Take a look at this article in the January 2008 issue of Scientific American: http://www.sciam.com/article.cfm?id=a-solar-grand-plan You might want to comment on it in your next posting. There’s a lively discussion at the end of the article.
